Uncovering the Voice of Walter Greer: The 1975 Nashville Recording
On July 22, 1975, Walter Greer recorded an hour and twenty-eight minutes of old-time fiddle tunes in his living room for folklorist Robert Cogswell. Despite being out of practice and playing on a borrowed fiddle, Greer created a priceless overview of early 20th century Tennessee Black fiddle styles offering a rare glimpse into his unique and distinctive repertoire.
Uncovering the Voice of Walter Greer has been issued as-is with only minor editing by CPMs Martin Fisher. Along with classics like Cumberland Gap, Ida Red, and Old Joe Clark in Greer performs rarities like Giles County and Uncle Bud.
Tiffany Minton's complete liner notes are available for download here. "Greer’s repertoire includes regional, popular, slightly obscure, and possibly unknown tunes. It’s difficult to know exactly how and why he learned all of the pieces in his repertoire, but there are clues in the selections that studied players and scholars of old time music might recognize."
